“When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine” is a short story from the book Interpreter of Maladies. It is a story about man from Daka who was granted by Pakistan Government to study foliage in New England Mr. Pirzada left his country during the war between Pakistan and India, when Daka was under Pakistan occupation. In Boston, he didn’t have a good financial situation, so he used to dine at his American Indian friends, whose little daughter Lilia used to be favorite by him. Mr. Pirzada used to bring for her special candy every time when he visited them. He always let her feel special; however, for Lilia the most important were Mr. Pirzada visits and his personal problems. She knew that he missed and worried about his family because he never got any news from them. Lilia prayed every evening for him. She worried so badly she also tried to understand his situation and the culture differences between him and her. She learned a lot of from him. She saw many little details that differed him from her parents, for example: she saw the watch that he always took out his pocket and lived on the table during the dinners, which symbolized his world. She learned a little bit about the Islam which is so different that her parents’ religion. For Lilia that time with Mr. Pirzada was an opulent culture lesson. It enriched her in new experiences. It changed her worldview and thought her about new different world.
For Mr. Pirzada that dinners with Lilia’s family were something what reminded him “a piece of home.” He could meet a familiar people who speaks the same language and tells jokes that he knows. Even though the religion difference between him and the Lilia’s family they both share their mutual memories from their home country in Asia. For Mr. Pirzada the Lilia’s family home was like a “marina haven,” where he had the “contemporary family,” where the extra glass of water always waited for him before he came to diner.
Mr. Pirzada spent one year in Boston before he came back to his country. After that time, he wrote once to the Lilia’s family. For Lilia it was the final end, she was sure that she doesn’t have to pray, because he was saved. She threw her “prayer candy,” because she knew that he never come back, but she saved her good memories of Mr. Pirzada.
I wish I could keep reading. I love the phrase, "opulent culture lesson." Remember when writing a response, you don't need to provide much background information. The important thing is to get right into the question. This gives you more time to focus on the quesiton.
It seems from your response that you liked this story. Did you? I did. I love this author.
